Ethnocentrism (1538 words) Essay I participated in the 11am service, at White Rock United Methodist Church, on White Rock Rd, in Sykesville Md. I attended the service on March 20, 2011. This church is an African American dominated church, with one or two other represented nationalities. I was conducting a participant observation, which is a research method were you observe people in their natural setting or activities. I went to the church and was an active participant in the service. I was concerned that I would stand out as a visitor at the service and I would feel uncomfortable and a bit lost during the service. I didn?t want to offend anyone with my presence.I was interested to see how I would be treated and if I would be asked back again. I wanted to see how different, if at all, it would be from church services I attend. I was also concerned with what I would wear to the service, I know several African Americans, and they dress very nice for church. The first task at hand was to come up with a suitable wardrob e for my outing. I called a close friend of mine, the evening before, who immediately told me I would have to wear hoes with my dress, ?All women at church wear hoes?. That in itself was a task to find not only hoes, but shoes to wear with them. After several outfit changes my children told me I looked church appropriate. The next morning I got up and dressed and drove to church. I sat in the parking lot for a minute to observe others going into the church, making sure I was not too overdressed. I was very nervous at this point; I do not like going places where I don?t know others. I finally got the nerve to go in. Upon my entry in the doors, my anxiety high, I noticed a small group of people on the stairs. I walked up to them and told them I was interested in attending the service and could they direct me to the chapel. They told me to go and speak to the lady around the corner, I did and she welcomed me very graciously and told me a bit about the service and the church. I was even asked to join their BBQ, which they hold several times in the spring and summer. I took a seat and noticed the church was much smaller than the one I attend; the congregation was elderly as well. I also took note that I was dressed appropriately. People were looking at me and smiling and I felt quite comfortable at this point. As the service began it was very similar to the service I attend. I did however notice there was a bit more singing, and people tend to shout out during the sermon. I am not use to that in my own church service but have been to other services where this has occurred. During the service I was asked to stand and introduce myself and everyone welcomed me. After the service I was asked to come back again and thanked for coming. I did not think I would feel much culture shock, personal disorientation when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life, (Macionis, 2011) during this trip. I socialize with many different ethnicities and am at ease with mingling with other na tionalities. I attend church service on occasion with my family and I use to attend every Sunday as a child. However, the clothing worn at this church as opposed to the service I attend was noticeably different. It was more reminiscent of the church services I attended when I was younger; we use to dress up for church then. I did experience my normal accelerated anxiety about being in a room full of strangers. Rather than from an ethnocentrism, the practice of judging another culture by the standards of one?s own culture, (Macionis, 2011) stand point. I have a hard time finding a pattern in African American culture that differs much from my own social perspective. The social structure and functions are the same. In the sermon that day, however, they spoke of gender-conflict and feminism. I found this quite interesting, the sermon spoke of how women have been recognized now in this country as almost equals while stil l in other places in the world they are treated less than second class citizens. It went on to quote from the bible how Jesus would teach women as well as men the word of the God. How the Jews only thought the men should have such knowledge. I never knew the Jews were so against women learning, I was glad to have learned something new from the sermon that day.I was very pleased with the sermon and the message it was sending out. I felt it fit well with the sociological perspective we have been learning in class. This experience for me was very pleasant. I am not a practicing Christian today, although I was raised in this belief. For me, this was reminiscent of my experience with church in my youth. The culture was a bit different; being among people of a different skin color in church was new to me. I do, however, spend a great deal of time in situations where my race is the only represented. The service practiced the same values and beliefs as those of churches I attended in the past. The experience, again, reminded me of why I do not attend church service now. Why I choose not to practice any social religion. I believe the social aspect of religion is a positive service, and benefit many; however in my opinion it causes too many social conflicts worldwide. Many cultures tend to use their religious beliefs to do harm to others. I also have a hard time believing the interpretations of the scriptures that have been defined in today?s societies. My experience with ethnicity and race, as well a s religion is vast. I have multicultural children, I have no practicing religion and I have lived in many places around the world. My first and predominating viewpoint and one I have taught my children is that people are all equal, we are of the same species just different skin colors; all different shades of brown. My views come from life experiences; I was not raised this way. In fact, I believe my rebellion against my mother as a teenager had a great impact on my beliefs today. I started dating outside my race as a young adult just to make my family crazy. I had always found different cultures interesting and enjoyed learning about them. As I moved from place to place as an adult, I was surprised to find such acceptance from other nationalities. I was brought up thinking whites were superior and any other cultures were less than us, unless of course they acted ?white?. I really enjoyed the closeness of the family in other cultures, and the value they put on their beliefs. I often talk to my children about the role religion plays in the conflicts in the Middle East today. I feel that the US government is a key player in the mistrust that has been instilled in the American people today regarding Muslims. I am a strong believer in learning about an individual and their beliefs and judging them for who they are and not what they look like or come from or believe in. I have no dislike for any religious belief as I said; I feel it is fine for others. I have a problem when people use it to justify bad actions. I think the American people as a whole are judging without knowledge of the religion they dislike. This is a form of racism and just shows ignorance. Why the US government wants to show the world our ignorance is beyond me. In conclusion, this assignment was a great experience for me. I enjoyed the service and the people were very friendly. I do intend to take my children back to the BBQ?s this year! Rock Crawlers, Order Grylloblattodea The order Grylloblattodea is not well known, due in part to the small size of this insect group. Commonly called rock crawlers, ice crawlers, or ice bugs, these insects were first described in 1914. Authoritarianism is a form of non-democratic rule defined by state power being centralized in a single person or a small group of people. Unlike democracies, these individuals in power are not dependent on the people for power. Thus, under authoritarianism, state leaders have little accountability to the public and there is little individual freedom. Additionally, authoritarian regimes are not bound by a constitution that might limit their power. Such democratic liberties such as the right to assembly, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press are highly controlled or non-existent. State policies are designed to maintain the power status quo in favor of the ruling group and perceived threats are marginalized or, in some cases, extinguished. Authoritarianism is more likely to exist in countries that have not yet experienced a high degree of modernization. This is because, without modernization, many of the fundamental institutions thought to be required for democracy are not yet thoroughly developed. These institutions include intellectuals, entrepreneurs, and the emergence of an economic middle class. In fact, it is highly correlated that a middle class is a vital requirement for the existence of democracy. However, modernization by itself does not always mean that the end result will be a democracy. For instance, if modernization occurs in some urban areas but lags behind in the rural areas it could be destabilizing to democratic institutions. What makes the earth’s temperature rise and fall? Do greenhouse gases block solar heat from leaving the earth, or is it only a product of solar activity? Many people have theorized on what causes temperatures to change. A catch phrase named Global Warming came to popularity. Environmentalists from all walks of life joined the ‘global warming’ fight. According to Thomas O’Connell the global warming debate wasn’t accepted in the 60’s and 70’s when he studied it. It only became popular recently in the 90’s. Everyone believed that humans were causing a catastrophe by punching a whole into an ‘ozone layer’ in the sky, letting harmful rays of sun in. People fought to shutdown plants in order to stop the emissions of carbon dioxide and other ‘greenhouse gases’. Everyone believed the global warming claims coming from senators and environmentalists. Today in the 21st century, science has stepped up to disprove the common myths of global warming. Many of the theories and claims of global warming are easily disproved with science. Science is the only tool that can be used to tell whether theories are fact or fiction. The first issue of global warming is the recent Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty designed to cut greenhouse emissions from successful countries. The international Kyoto protocol has been in debate for many years. The Kyoto protocol is an international treaty to reduce developed country’s greenhouse emissions, specifically carbon dioxide, to 7% below their 1990 levels. As President Bush came to office he refused the U.S.’s involvement in the treaty. President Bush wasn’t even the man that killed the idea for the U.S. (National Center 2). A bill, stating that the U.S. wouldn’t ratify any climate treaty that would harm the United States economically and would have no consequences for developing or â€Å"3rd World† countries, was passed with a unanimous 95-0 vote by the senate before President Bush was elected (National Center 2). The treaty isn’t about global warming. It was designed in order to transfer success from developed nations like the U.S. to developing or struggling countries (Tuccille 2). Research declares that China, India, and Brazil who are not affected by the Kyoto Protocol will increase their CO2 emissions by 16% more than the United States even without  the Protocol in effect (National Center 3). Proponents of the protocol confessed that the treaty â€Å"would not have the beneficial environmental impacts advertised† and that â€Å"the costs of implementation would be much higher than the public had been told† (National Center 1). U.S. economy would suffer if we agreed to partake in the Kyoto scheme. Gasoline prices would increase by as much as 66 cents per gallon, electrical costs would also increase up to 80%, energy intensive products such as chemicals, steel, paper, and cars would rise in price by as much as 15%. (National Center 2). â€Å"The economy of the USA would be devastated,† states Thomas O’Connell. The minority income would be lowered by about 10%, 864,000 African Americans as well as 511,000 Hispanics would be unemplo yed (National Center 2). Oil and fuel used for farming would be taxed or restricted causing in a higher cost of producing and lower profits of products including corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, hogs, and milk (Heartland Institute 2 and 3). Businesses taxed by the government for their emissions would result in raising costs for their consumers (Heartland Institute 3). New regulations would be implemented for automobiles making carpooling mandatory and would penalize owners of trucks and sports cars. The average household income would even drop by about $2,700 (Heartland Institute 2). Even the unbiased and credible Time magazine quoted, â€Å"the campaign against global warming seemed to be over before it even started† referring to the Kyoto Protocol (Tuccille 1). Are we prepared to â€Å"disappear from the map† in order to prevent 1 degree Celsius of warming for the next Century? One of the hot issues on global warming is that humankind has had something to do with the temperature. Man-made emissions such as carbon dioxide have been claimed to cause global temperatures to increase over the years. Ever since the industrial revolution in the 1940’s man has continued to emit gases such as CO2 into the air. Many people claim that CO2 is what blocks heat from escaping the atmosphere. They also claim that mankind has poked a hole in something called the â€Å"ozone layer†, a protective layer above the atmosphere that keeps harmful UV radiation out, which lets more solar rays in. How convenient. The fact is that 98% of these â€Å"greenhouse gases† are natural to the earth. Man has not emitted them and they are not pollutants. They are mostly water vapors and clouds (Zipperer 2). Does that sound dangerous to you? The earth  has even cut down on the rate of carbon dioxide emissions from the years 1973-1990 (Lindzen 1 and 2). Even if we did have a lot of CO2 in the air evidently the effects wouldn’t be catastrophic. In the past the atmosphere has had much more amounts of CO2 in it before without significant increases in temperature (Lindzen 4). Richard Lindzen, a professor of meteorology at MIT, claims that a doubling of CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere would only result in a 1 degree Celsius increase in global temperature (National Center 3). Another greenhouse gas is methane. Methane is more harmful than CO2 but will not increase significantly for another 100 years if it continues at its current rate (Michaels 1). Many credible experts in the field of science have agreed that man is not responsible. Over 17,000 scientists from all over the world have signed a petition declaring that â€Å"there is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the earth’s climate† (Heartland Institute 5). Even if there were significant cases of warming global temperatures the effects wouldn’t be as tragic as everyone thinks. There are many benefits to the warming of the earth, as there are consequences. Warming on a global scale would have dramatic effects on life and climates. Some effects may be harmful but many of them are beneficial. Some ideas about global warming consequences are myths that are unlikely. Many people say that global warming is linked with the uprising in tropical storms. Storms such as hurricanes coming from the southeast into Florida coasts have been getting stronger for many years, but in 1991 there was a drought of storms that ranged to 1995. The amount and intensity fell way below the average, which suggests that these storms were not affected by the warming of the earth (Bible Believers 3 and 4). Others claim that sea levels have risen all over the world because the polar ice caps are slowly melting due to the warming. Tests have proven that temperatures at the poles are actually getting colder and that sea levels have been rising for centuries before we had any affect on the c limate (Bible Believers 3). Former Vice President Al Gore spoke of diseases migrating due to climate warming. He spoke of diseases like the Black Plague and Cholera, which he believed were  spread because of weather patterns. Rats, who spread the Black Plague, lived in both warm and cold climates so they had no reason to migrate. His second example Cholera has been a problem in both warm and cold climates and can be easily treated by purifying the water we drink (Heartland Institute 9). Many people have never heard possible benefits of global warming before. Having a warmer climate is very beneficial. Historically, very warm periods in time resulted in flourishing life such as plants, animals, and fish (Bible Believers 4). Even large amounts of CO2 can be beneficial. More CO2 in the atmosphere fuels plants, which makes more food for all walks of life. Vikings were once able to farm what is now a cold and icy Greenland (Zipperer 3). A warming of the earth would result in longer growing seasons and would deplete world hunger and crop failure (Robinson 3). Global warming wouldn’t be all that bad, but we do not have a way to tell if there is or will be any warming because of the difficulty to predict the weather. In order to make predictions about weather, people have designed computer models that estimate changes in weather patterns. The models are designed from past weather data and possible factors effecting the weather. What modelers do not know is that global weather is very hard to predict, maybe even impossible without the right understanding and tools for the job (Robinson 2). Factors such as clouds, precipitation, oceans, and the sun are misunderstood and often underestimated (Zipperer 2). Modelers also leave out possible advances in the future such as nuclear energy and the positive effect it would have on the environment (Lindzen 2). Our current technology isn’t even close to being advanced enough. Errors in the data are equivalent to 50% (Lindzen 3). These computer models could not even predict weather from the past. While global temperatures have raised by .3 to .6 C over the past 100 years models have over predicted the increase to be from .7 to 1.4 C by the year 1990 (Heartland Institute 7). Climate modelers have even inputted their own bias into the data, shifting variables to what they want them to be. â€Å"Climate modelers have been cheating for so long it’s almost become respectable,† says Richard A. Kerr, a writer for Science magazine. Further research on the topic is necessary in order to accurately determine whether we have a problem or not. Many people of profession have studied global warming and what may affect the outcome of their results. When measuring from the surface global temperatures have increased by about .6 degrees Celsius with a .2-degree error, but parts of the United States including the southeast have cooled slightly since the late 19th century (NOAA 2). For those 100 years of slight warming, 70% of it occurred before the industrial revolution in 1940 in which man began to emit gases into the air (Zipperer 2). The surface on and around the equator has remained plus or minus 1 degree Celsius of its current temperature for billions of years (Lindzen 4). Research has also been done to determine the affect on rising and falling temperatures. Scientists have found very close relations with solar activity from the sun and the current temperature patterns, which suggests that fluctuations in temperatures are out of our hands (NOAA 5). Satellites are the best way to determine global temperatures. They are unbiased and have only a 0.001-degree Celsius of error (Heartland Institute 6). These satellites have confirmed that there is no evidence of global warming. If anything there is a slight cooling in the atmosphere (National Center 3). Very reliable agencies have done their own research on global warming. Many scientists have tested the greenhouse theory carefully and have found that greenhouse warming isn’t even occurring and that rising temperatures are do to different stages of solar activity (Robinson 1). In 1995 the IPCC, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, did not prove that humans were affecting global temperatures (Heartland Institute 8). Their report, Climate Change, includes a statement, â€Å"The balance of evidence suggests a discernible human influence on the global climate† (Heartland Institute 8). Dr. Roy Spencer, a meteorologist and team leader of the NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center, quotes, â€Å"The temperatures we measure from space a re actually on a very slight downward trend since 1979†¦ the trend is about 0.05C per decade cooling† (Heartland Institute 7). In a recent poll only 17% of the meteorological society and the American Geophysical Society believe that global warming is a product of man (Bible Believers 2). Representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency are threatening to withdraw their support from a global warming study done by the government. They have said that the report has an â€Å"extreme/alarmist tone† and that it does not â€Å"appear to fairly reflect the scientific literature and the historical record†Ã‚  (Torres 1). The representatives claimed that the report also had â€Å"scientifically inaccurate statements about the potential implications of climate change for air pollution and human† (Torres 1 and 2). Usually, in scientific law, if a hypothesis fails through experimentation it should be discarded, but the theory of global warming and greenhouse gases as a result of man is still considered substantial hypothesis even though it has been proven to be unlikely (Robinson 2). The debate of global warming may continue on for many years to come. Mankind may never see any rising in global temperatures, but nevertheless it will be speculated. Thomas O’Connell At this moment in time there has not been any reliable and convincing evidence that the globe is dangerously warming. Global temperature is a product of natural variables that affect the earth. Man has little if any influence on this temperature. Many of the greenhouse claims have been poorly researched and have yet to be proven credible. Hopefully in the future science will prevail and provide the real answer. Until then, people interested in global warming should do research of their own in order to formulate their own opinion. Life on earth has adapted or evolved to the environment. The earth will never adapt or change due to a single species; the earth is far too powerful. As this paper comes to a close a quote sums up the main idea. One of the most special concerns has been the use of violence in the media as well as the video games. As per Bryant Vorderer (2013), media violence can desensitize people to violence in the real world and that, for some people, watching violence in the media becomes enjoyable and does not result in the anxious arousal that is generally expected after watching it. This study discusses the impact of violent movies and video games on the psychology. Effect of violence on television In a violent television program viewers may or may not get into the identification with a violent character. People are more likely to behave aggressively themselves when they get to identify themselves in context to a violent character. In case of children whatever they hear or see in the media tends to have an effect on them in some or the other way. Learning of aggressive attitude and behaviour, desensitization or the increase in the callousness for the victims of violence, inclination or exaggeration of fear of becoming a victim by some means of violence are some of the consequences which have a psychological decline among the viewers (Mller et al.2012). While all of these effects reflect adverse outcomes, it is the first an increased propensity for violent behaviour that is at the core of public health concern about televised violence. The statistical relationship between childrens exposure to violent portrayals and their subsequent aggressive behaviour has been shown to be st ronger than the relationship between asbestos exposure and the risk of laryngeal cancer; there is no controversy in the medical, public health, and social science communities about the risk of harmful effects from childrens exposure to media violence. Rather, there is strong consensus that exposure to media violence is a significant public health concern as well. In view of Ramos et al. (2013), most violence on television are either glamorized or sanitized. Glamorized refers to the fact that most of the violence in the television is performed by the most glamorous character in the show, and they do not suffer remorse, criticism, or penalty for the violent behaviour. More than a third of the violence is performed by attractive characters, and more than two thirds of the violence being committed get away with no punishment at all. Sanitized refers to the failure of the portrayals in showing realistic harms to the respective victims. Pain and suffering which are immediate is included in less than half of the violent scenes in the show. More than one third of the violent interactions depict unrealistic and mild negative consequences to the victims, which considerably understates the severity of the injury caused by certain actions in the actual practical world (Gunter Harrison, 2013). Hence most of the violent shows tend to be sanitized which sh ows minimum harm to the victims visually but it has psychological effects in other ways. Chronic exposure to violent depictions can cause desensitization to violence which means that the viewers may more willingly accept violence from other people and perpetrate violent activities by themselves also. The over exposure of an individual to violence, and especially the one which is portrayed in a realistic manner, may lead viewers, more likely children to believe that it is unsafe to live on earth because it is probably not a secure place to be in (Gentile Bushman, 2012). Overestimation of the possibility that ultimately there are chances of them to become victims of violent activities is highly expected and leads to the increased undue stress, tension and anxiety. Shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigations, House M.D are shows which have been considered to have effects on viewers. However, the effects can include learning and enjoying the show but not get negatively affected or may result in psychological effects which include violent streaks, tension of being a victim. Effect of violent video games The advent of video games like the "Call of Duty" and "Grand Theft Auto" are very much violent, but as the concept of video gaming violence is new, it is slowly gaining pace as compared to the media violence effects. Although the entire concept raises many questions as the video game user is not only viewing it but is also directly involved by playing it. Around 90-95% of adolescents are video game players, and use various sources for it. Most of the video games have component of violence in it. This has given rise to meta-analytic reviews that show the negative effects of video games. According to Shaffer Kipp (2013), expose to violent video games is an important risk factor which leads to the increase in aggression, rude behaviour, aggressive cognition, decreased empathy and pro social behaviour. This is due to increase in the negative thoughts with the person who is playing such video games more frequently. One of the biggest problems with violent video games is that they discourage players from exercising self control within them. For example in Grand theft Auto video games the players can steal cars, kill other characters in the game including police officials, in such situations players are often rewarded instead of being punished (Greitemeyer, Traut-Mattausch Osswald, 2012). Very few psychological traits seem to remain stable from early childhood into adulthood, and fewer yet have been shown to carry out the prediction of success or failure in ones life. Another problem that affects the psychology of the young people is that the players are more likely to identify with a violent character (Mentzoni et al.2011). If the game is first person shooter then the player have the same visualization perspective as the killer. And if the game is a third person, the player tends to involve in the controlling the actions of the violent character from a more distant visual perspective. Violent games directly reward violent behaviour, by including rewarding points to the player for getting into next level. In some games, players receive verbal praising for the way the play. These effects tend to go unnoticed as people do not understand the psychological effect of the video game violence, as they understand only the biological process (Montag et al.2012). There are good theoretical reasons to believe that violent video games are even more harmful than violent television programs or movies. Aggressive behaviour is multi determined with exposure of violent video games, on the other hand, even small effects and the effect of the violent video games is small to medium in its effect size can have a very bad consequences on the societal level when many people are exposed. However, children are more likely to imitate the actions of the characters with whom they are able to identify easily. In violent video games players being the characters get to choose the weapons as well, and the process requires active participation instead of just passive observation. The repetition of the process increases the learning among the players, which tend to give a behavioural rehearsal to the players (Greenfield, 2014). For example, some people have addictions to gambling, while other people can't remember to put the milk away after they use it. After a while though, a person's flaws come back to haunt them. The tragedy MacBeth is no exception to this. In it, many of the character's die. And the reason is that they have a flaw, that would eventually lead to their downfall. Not every character is deserving of his fate though. Some characters have a minor flaw, which shouldn't lead to their death. But other's have a major flaw, which is would eventually lead them to their death anyway. The first Thane of Cawdor, is killed by MacBeth for trying to lead a revolution against England. His fatal flaw was that he was according to Ross, "a disloyal traitor". The thane of Cawdor was greedy, and wanted the throne of England for himself, and as a result was murdered. But his murder wasn't really disheartening, because the Thane of Cawdor, deserved his fate. He was leading a battle, in which many lost their lives, for the sake of greed, and deserved to die because of his flaw. Duncan was the King of England, and was murdered by MacBeth. He was murdered, because in order for MacBeth to fulfill his plan and become king, Duncan would have to die. Duncan's fatal flaw was that he was too trusting. For example, he thought that none of his friends could really be enemies. If Duncan was more careful about his safety at MacBeth's castle, he may have had a chance to survive. But Duncan's flaw, wasn't something so horrible that he should die. Most people need to trust each other more, and just because one person did, he shouldn't have to die. MacBeth's former best friend, Banquo was also killed by MacBeth. Banquo was killed, because he knew too much about the murder of Duncan. But that was not his fatal flaw. Banquo's fatal flaw was that although he knew that MacBeth killed Duncan, he really didn't do anything about it. There were many opportunities where Banquo could tell someone such as MacDuff what he thought about the murders. But Banquo didn't deserve death, just because he didn't act quickly in telling someone that MacBeth killed Duncan. Banquo knew that if he said anything, no one would believe him, and he would be executed. Lady MacBeth is MacBeth's wife. She is his coconspirator in killing Duncan. Although she helps MacBeth get the courage to commit the murder, she isn't willing to do it herself. She uses the excuse that Duncan looked too much like her father. Unlike MacBeth though, it is harder for Lady MacBeth to live with the fact that she helped cause the murder of the king. And in the end, it makes her so crazy that she commits suicide. Whether or not Lady MacBeth deserved her fate is a tricky question. Although she did encourage MacBeth to murder Duncan, she feels regret for her action. Also, she realized what she did was wrong. But in my opinion, she realized it a little too late, and Duncan was still dead so she did deserve her fate. MacBeth was the focus of the entire play, and that's why it was named after him. All of the problems start when he murder's Duncan. He commits the murder because of his fatal flaw, he is too ambitious. If he wasn't so ambitious and determined to be king, then he would never have killed Duncan. And if MacBeth didn't kill Duncan none of the other characters would die. MacBeth deserved his fate more than any other characters in the play. He did many things wrong. First he killed Duncan, then he killed Banquo. After that, MacBeth killed MacDuff's family. And worst of all, MacBeth disturbed the balance of nature. Also, MacBeth didn't feel any remorse until he was faced with death. If MacBeth just waited for his time, he would have been king, and have had a chance to enjoy it. Every character that died in MacBeth had one fatal flaw. The first Thane of Cawdor was a traitor. Duncan was too trusting. Banquo didn't do anything about the knowledge he had. Lady MacBeth helped plot the murder of Duncan. And MacBeth, destroyed the natural order and harmony of nature. There are different approaches to the marketing mix, e.g. the 4Ps, 5Ps or even the 7Ps. Marketing variables are of two groups: The offering which consists of the product, packaging, service, brand and price; and The methods or tools, which consist of the distribution channels, personal selling, advertising and promotion. The manager has contr ol over these variables and he/she bases organizational decisions on them, although there are factors to be considered such as the customers, competition and other external uncontrollable factors. Prices cannot be changed outright because of government control or regulation. A product’s size, colour, and design cannot be changed right away because of the costs in introducing the changes; therefore, a product’s characteristics cannot be changed very often. Promotion campaigns also cannot be changed overnight, while people in the company need training and development and cannot be sacked without due process. Marketing managers must develop a strategy for all the mix variables that matches with the customers’ needs. Product This includes design, packaging, display, brand characteristics. There are many types of products which can be favourable or unfavourable and can be in the form of an idea, or good or service. The product variable deals with researching information about consumers’ needs and wants. The design of the product will depend on the consumers’ product wants. Sometimes a product will have to be altered according to the customers’ changing preferences. There are some classifications of products, and these are consumer products which are available to satisfy people, and products which are made for industries or companies known as industrial products (business-to-business products). The products are based on consumers want and their characteristics are determined through surveys and researches by private companies doing surveys. Consumer products are divided into four types: ‘convenience, shopping, specialty and unsought products’. (Jobber and Lancaster, 2003, p. 243) Convenience products include bread or soft drinks. These are inexpensive products bought with little time planning by the customer. The brand is not so much important in buying convenience products, although sometimes they are important and being considered by meticulous customers. Convenience products are sold by retail outlets and small stores. Shopping products are products bought by customers with planning. Customers look at the stores and brands, including how prices and other features fare in the market. A marketer usually requires few retail outlets in selling shopping products. These products are purchased less frequently and therefore there is lower inventory but have higher gross sales. Shopping products include appliances and furniture, electronic gadgets, and much more. (Jobber and Lancaster, 243) Speciality products have unique characteristics and they are prepared by a significant group of buyers who, before doing the purchase, initially plan the purchase. An example is painting by a well-renowned painter or a Cartier watch. Buyers are not concerned with who is selling but the most important thing is there is an outlet selling the product. Unsought products are those which require aggressive selling. Examples of unsought products are encyclopaedias or life insurance. The sales person takes his selling prowess by trying to convince of the benefits derived from buying the products. In so doing, a marketer puts some of his luck in the buyer’s charge, because he/she may withdraw the price cut. Price has different effects on the mind of the buyer. He may or may not take the bait. Jobber and Lancaster (2003, p. 561) state: ‘Because price has a psychological impact on customers, marketers can use it symbolically. By raising a price, they can emphasise the quality of a product and try to increase the status associated with its ownership.
